Afforestation Opportunities

This map represents potential terrestrial sequestration related to agroforestry practices and biomass production on agricultural lands, as well as afforestation of marginal agricultural soils and change in management of existing private forests. The GIS analysis of afforestation suitability was based on a determination of: 1) existing areas on non-federal lands that would be available for afforestation on the basis of current use (mainly cropland or pasture), and 2) soil and climate situations suitable for afforestation. Tabular data for suitable areas were converted from acres of potential forest into estimates of sequestration by primary forest groups, based on projected average annual yields of timber converted into its equivalent carbon dioxide sequestration impact. Data sources: NRCS – NCGC (STATSGO); USGS/EPA (NLCD).
