BSCSP GIS: Overview

The Partnership's GIS activities involve the development and maintenance of three core elements:

  • Big Sky Carbon Cyberinfrastructure: an integrated, multi-tier computing environment, housed at the Big Sky Institute, and comprised of servers, staffing, networking, data storage and backup.
  • Big Sky Carbon Data Libraries: comprising geodatabases and related directories. There are currently two libraries. The first contains regional and selected national data; the second will contain site-level project data.
  • Big Sky Carbon Atlas: the web-based geoportal and the contents/tools to which it currently does or will provide access:
    • Static maps and associated resources (e.g., figures and visualizations) to describe regional factors affecting sequestration potential and project-level site characteristics;
    • Distributed mapping, including a custom interactive map and published GIS services assuring reliable, enterprise-level dissemination, fusion, and coupling of data to project scientists and other stakeholders;
    • Data Resources - online access to raw data and associated FGDC-compliant metadata from the Data Libraries.
